THOOTHUKUDI (First Published : 04 Feb 2010 03:08:00 AM IST): The multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoted by AMRL in joint venture with TIDCO at Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district has gained momentum with expression of interest (EOI) received from the Middle-East and fareastern countries.
Speaking to Express on the sidelines of an Investors’ Meet here on Wednesday, Shiv Prakash, CEO - AMRL said that two Dubai-based air-conditioner manufacturing industries have signed MoUs for setting up industries at Nanguneri SEZ. However, he declined to name the companies when asked. “Pharmaceutical companies based in Japan and Taiwan also have sent their EoIs for setting up industries at Nanguneri,” Prakash said.Reacting to the huge time lapse in setting up this SEZ, he said that AMRL became the promoter only in 2007 and the SEZ notification was given by the Government in November 2008.
“We are emphasising on new ventures at the SEZ and do not encourage shifting of industries from other places,” he said adding the Single Window Mechanism at this SEZ would bring a hasslefree experience for the investors.He further said that engineering, electronics & hardware and automobile industries are expected to set up base at the Nanguneri SEZ.
“This is the first multi-product SEZ in Tamil Nadu, apart from having the distinction of being the first SEZ to be set up in a Tier-III city,” Prakash said.
On employment generation, the CEO said that one lakh people will be employed when the SEZ is completed.
